Tile Painting

This workshop introduces participants to the art of tile painting, from traditional Portuguese motifs to contemporary imagery. Over the course of three hours, each person explores different techniques with guided support and creates three personalized tiles to take home. The tiles are then fired and can be collected two days later, with optional shipping available at the participant’s expense. No previous experience is required.

The session is led by Marisa Murtinha, a visual artist whose practice centers on drawing and figurative painting. After studying classical oil painting techniques in 2023, she expanded her work to tile painting while living in Porto, developing a deep appreciation for the craft. Her pieces draw inspiration from centuries-old Portuguese azulejo traditions, blending decorative and utilitarian forms. Marisa also works across drawing, engraving, screen printing, and cyanotype, and has participated in several group exhibitions since 2021.
