“Ice Cream Is Better Than Mathematics!” by Björn Heyn

16.05.2025 ------> 23.08.2025

This exhibition offers a playful and poetic perspective on life’s dichotomies, exploring the contrasts between simple pleasures and the complexities of everyday challenges. The exhibition title, which juxtaposes ice cream—symbol of pleasure, lightness, and childhood—with mathematics, evoking rationality and the trials of growing up, reflects the duality present in the artist’s work: the tension between the light and the arduous, pleasure and demand.

In his collages, paintings, and installations, Heyn recreates the everyday with irreverence, using a vibrant color palette and humorous elements that transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. Through fragments of reality, the artist deconstructs and reorganizes the elements he observes, creating new forms and meanings that challenge traditional perceptions of life. His art emerges as a meditation on chaos, nostalgia, and the learning process, imbued with a softness and lightness that invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences.

This exhibition offers visitors an immersion into Björn Heyn’s creative universe, where pleasure and challenge meet, encouraging us to look at the world with greater curiosity and creativity. By exploring the nuances between the lightness of ice cream and the difficulties of mathematics, Heyn invites the public to rediscover the importance of maintaining a sense of wonder toward life’s simplicity.

This exhibition is the result of the 2nd International Artistic Residency organized by GAMA RAMA, in partnership with Estúdio Yucca, which each year hosts an international artist in its space to develop their work surrounded by the Ria Formosa.

Björn Heyn (1992, Berlin, Germany) is a visual artist whose practice explores the subtleties of everyday life through painting, collage, and installation. His intuitive and playful approach transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary, offering a critical reinterpretation of the objects and scenes that make up our daily lives. With a very particular and subtle sense of humor, Heyn challenges established perceptions of reality, proposing new interpretations of the world around us. His creative process is marked by the deconstruction and reorganization of the elements he observes, resulting in compositions with a collage-like character.

“My work allows me to play with the components of what I see, reorganizing them to generate new meanings,” he explains.

His pieces are also influenced by childhood memories, evoking the purity of a child’s gaze. Founder of Studio Huette e.V. in Berlin (2019), Heyn has exhibited his work in various international galleries and museums, including the Urban Nation Museum (Berlin), Galerie Biesenbach (Cologne), Galerie Durchgang (Basel), and Kunsthalle Wil (Switzerland). He has also participated in several artist residencies such as Campo Altissimo (Italy) and Kunsthaus Bella Martha (Germany), consolidating his presence in the contemporary art scene.
