During artistic residency at Estúdio Yucca in mid-May this year, surrounded by the natural context of the Ria Formosa, Tuyo created “Thoughts from the Thicket”, exploring this intersection between the ancient and the contemporary in an attempt to capture a timeless dimension through organic forms and archetypal symbols.
In order to preserve the essence of his art, he integrates digital tools with artificial textures into his work, while keeping alive the artisanal simplicity and imperfections of manual labour, which he considers fundamental to the authenticity of his creations. His intuitive and childlike approach reveals his fascination with universal cultural expressions, emphasising the importance of community, compassion and reflection on modern values.
David Schmitt, also known as Tuyo, is a self-taught artist and graphic designer whose work is deeply inspired by archaic forms, ancient mythology and the recurring symbolism of cultures around the world. Born in Bamberg, Germany, in 1994, he studied Communication Design at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences and currently lives in Barcelona, where he develops his artistic work. His vision of art as a means of reconnecting with the human experience is reflected in his search for forms and symbols that echo throughout history, drawing inspiration from the traditions of the past to create a lasting legacy that resonates with future generations.
