“The Walter Winkalot Club” by Tom Leamon

31.08.2023 ------> 21.10.2023

The unveiling of a diverse new collection of works by British artist based in the Algarve, Tom Leamon. Exploring new frontiers in making, the show will focus on the connection between Leamons onsite and offsite studios and the curated exhibition space. This “ongoing investigation” brings together painting, illustration, sculpture, furniture and craft and aims to be the litmus test for a series of continuous collaborative experiments into the creative process.

Tom’s work is about confronting the fear of death by experiencing life and raising the question of living, asking why we get caught up in the rhythms of a materialistic life. His art strips back human condition to its core in an attempt to refine life to its simplest form, hitting us with a disarming childish naivety. As we move faster and evolve, what do we leave behind?

Tom Leamon (b.1981), is a London born Painter. His creations are an experiment into releasing expressions of freedom in an altogether constrained world. Tom’s work delves into that of the human psyche, with a fascination in the cycle of birth, life, growth and death. There are stories being told in each and every piece, hidden and fractured messages which implore you to fully immerse yourself. By exploring symbolism in a number of mark making techniques, Tom’s works challenge us on both a sentimental and spiritual level. Tom’s artistic journey really began soon after leaving university where he set up the art collective ‘Us So Far’.

With a lack of opportunities to exhibit in established galleries the group took on derelict buildings all over the UK, where they would curate unique and disruptive exhibitions. This avenue into the art world enabled him to inhabit the realms of both a full time artist and curator. It was in 2004 that he was given a yearlong bursary to work at Red Cow Studios where he created a collection for his first solo exhibition. This leg up enabled Tom the time he so desperately needed to find a serious and mature voice within his own work. The following years were extremely prosperous, with numerous solo exhibitions and a number of very well received curatorial events.

Tom now lives in Portugal where he continues to hone his skills creating new and challenging bodies of work. With multiple International solo exhibitions in Portugal and the UK, Leamon has also had solo exhibitions in Miami and been involved in multiple group shows in London, Lisbon, Berlin and Paris. He has shown at ArtRio, Rio De Janeiro, Untitled Art Fair Miami and Frieze Viewing Room New York.
