Out of Orbit: Where Do the Birds Hide? overflows the expression of an inner cadence, step by step, stroke by stroke, spot by spot. Where the innermost becomes a foundation between other beings and places, as are the walls of a house. It is in black paint that Joana Rosa Bragança often finds simplicity and strength, not only in art but also in life. Where her mind becomes more permissive to error, assimilating it as part of a creative process, a direct link to the unconscious. The urgency to create in black and white, without references or previous sketches emerges from an internal need to simplify a confusing world, already overcrowded with images, stimuli, colours and infinite possibilities. Sometimes, the boundary between chaos and clarity can be something as tangible as a line of black ink on a sheet of paper.

Joana Rosa Bragança (Sagres, 1986) is a freelance visual artist and illustrator currently living in Olhão. She graduated in Visual Arts / Painting (2004-2008), post-graduated in Artistic Illustration (2011-2012) and exhibits her work collectively and individually in Portugal and abroad since 2005, being the Ó! Galeria (Porto), Galeria GAMA RAMA (Faro), and Pinta Roxa (Olhão) the spaces where she exhibits her work in a more constant way.

Her creativity is mainly nourished by nature, the sea, memories, real and imaginary creatures that surround her and their stories, experiences and emotions. Rosa unfolds between personal and collective projects using mainly watercolours, china ink, various printing techniques, cutting and collage.

Recently she has been exploring ceramics and animation, debuting in 2019 with her first animated short film “Maré”, which received the “Best Animation” award at the Caminhos do Cinema Português 2020 Festival and was selected for numerous festivals around the world. It also has a selection in the international biennale ILUSTRARTE’18 and several honourable mentions and merit awards by 3x3 International Illustration Awards.
